LA MUSA ITALIANA : Mariacarla Boscono

rawan rihani

As I am currently designing the next collection, I will be sharing some of my inspirations and muses along the way.  Im currently musing over  Italian supermodel Mariacarla Boscono.

She is such an elegant Italian woman exuding strength, sensuality, and mystery.  I love her authenticity, which has inspired me the most:

"I am who I am. You get what you see. That’s why I’ve been a successful model, and will probably be around even 20 years from now. I put so much passion into what I do. I am still working these days, and I’m still very excited about what I’m doing. The day I lose this kind of excitement I’m just going to leave. I don’t want to make anyone miserable just because I am."

Her inner strength and passion comes through her work, whether she is being photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, Juergen Teller, on the cover of Vogue or walking down the runway, she exudes this passion in a natural and striking way and everyone can feel it.  Che bella! We love you Mariacarla!

THE DRESS THAT SPARKED IT ALL

rawan rihani

Earlier this week I tried on the dress that inspired me to start designing clothing again and launch Aurora Vestita. I almost wore this piece of art as my own wedding dress but decided it's too precious.  It belonged to my dear beloved Aunt Alessandra who was married in this dress in the seventies. She was - and continues to be - a muse for me, and her and my mom's style and gardens resonate with me in the deepest way.

When deciding on a name for this collection label, I contemplated naming simply my name, and then thought to make a connection to my floral design company, Aurora Botanica since they are sisters, afterall.  Aurora is the goddess of the dawn, and mythology is also another big source of inspiration for me.  Vestita, means "dress" in italian, so my mom suggested "Aurora Vestita", it felt so perfect, there was no doubt!  Fact: synchronistically, I realized, AV, (Aurora Vestita), were also my aunt's initials!

Whenever I go to Rhode Island to visit my family, my mom, who is an incredibly stylish Italian woman, always enjoys putting outfits together and I never hestitate to look in her wardrobe and try something on.  I always find myself falling in love with the same pieces for years and years.  She has kept many pieces in such good condition including some incredible pieces from the 70s- 80s, and many pieces of which were made in Italy.  I realized that Ive always loved all these clothes, and loved playing with her wardrobe. All the fabrics are always so beautiful and feel good on your skin and her wardrobe can be styled over and over in new combinations and different ways.

I realized that building a wardrobe is the foundation of having classic and effortless style.  I also recognized that I've developed and enriched my own philosophy on style, and felt it was time to share it with the world.

My intention with my line is to honor this philosophy by making it available to you and to honor yourself and feel like the goddess you are!

Stowe, Vermont magic is real.  We got in our new summer blouses right in the knick of time to take them on the road.

I went to Vermont to celebrate my 1st year anniversary with my husband Zac, we spent our honeymoon there exactly a year ago, and we both missed that mountain air. We both can't believe how quickly 1 year went by, but we do feel so lucky to be in love and wanted to celebrate having a few days away from the city!  (Speaking of our wedding, that process of finding a dress and curating our wedding was the catalyst that got me back into my designer roots, read the next journal entry where I will tell you why!)

I brought the new Vestita styles along hoping I can test them out, and fell in love with wearing them (so much that I only wore the Guadelupe in Ivory Crinkle Cotton Linen and the Belladonna in Black Swiss Dot interchangeably.) I got to enjoy these new summer styles while taking in the sweet perfume mountain air under blue skies and amongst enjoying the magic of the Vermont country.

One of my favorite moments from our anniversary travels was hiking Mount Mansfield (aka Stowe mountain) which was both blissful and a challenge!

Hiking Mount Mansfield was tough, we hiked over trails that had us wandering through the forest and at some points, even waterfalls, slippery rocks and twisting tree roots resembling the quest in Neverending Story to save Fantasia. But at the same time,  fresh sunshine was shining its rays through the forest pine trees and sweet smell of pine and flowers kept us going further eager to relax at the summit. After 2 and a half hours, the glory was ours and we made it to the top! And the view made it absolutely worth the trek.

Luckily, I brought along a few of the new summer styles and Zac photographed: the Belladonna wrap blouse, the Guadelupe blouse and styled with the Aiyana Skirt. I meditated over the pristine mountain view and frolicked in the wildflowers, and it was pure bliss.

JUNE 7, 2017

The sunshine is finally here, it's June, and Brooklyn is in full bloom! We took a walk in the hood to say hello to all the little flowers blossoming and gladly whilst wearing a couple of Aurora Vestita lightweight, airy vibrant pieces.... and of course, brought some leftover flowers from the Botanica studio with us, because why not?! Flower party!
